A proposal to build a new cricket stadium in the Bay Area could help bring one of the world’s most popular sports to a new audience.

This week, Santa Clara County approved an “exclusive negotiating agreement” with Major League Cricket.

The ENA allows the county and the league to “move forward with lease negotiations and design approvals to develop a world-class cricket stadium” near the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.

Santa Clara County and Major League Cricket have announced that they are in extensive negotiations for a “world-class” cricket stadium at the county’s fairgrounds in San Jose, the first of its kind in the region. The $50 million proposal, according to MLC spokesperson Tom Dunmore, would allow for up to 15,000 fans to watch a game. Dunmore said that his organization expects negotiations to finalize by the end of the year — and hopes the stadium can open by 2024.
