Clandestine Brewing

At Clandestine Brewing, we are more than just a craft brewery and taproom; we are artisans dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in brewing and celebrating the diverse and rich tapestry of beer. Located just south of downtown, San Jose, our brewery is a haven for beer enthusiasts. Founded by a group of passionate beer lovers, Clandestine Brewing was born out of a shared vision to create a space where beer aficionados could come together to indulge in both traditional and also new and unique beers. Cheers!

Burell School

Burrell School’s origins date back to 1854 when Lyman J. Burrell settled the rough wilderness that is now home to our winery and Estate vines. Carrying on the more than 130 year old tradition at the School, David and Anne Moulton began development of the Estate vineyard in 1973. At a 1,600 foot elevation, the site faces to the southwest. Soils are a complex mixture of loam and shale due to our close proximity to the San Andreas Fault.  Nearby Monterey Bay brings warm days and cool nights. This results in a unique microclimate, perfect for long, slow ripening of cool climate grapes.

Initial plantings were to Chardonnay and Merlot, with Pinot Noir added in 2002. Cultivation and spraying are done with heritage Cletrac tractors; pruning, seasonal operations and picking are all done by hand.  From growing to harvesting, the goal is toward the best wine grapes possible in order to produce distinctive, concentrated wines reflective of their mountain home.

Once harvest begins, the sure hand of winemaker David Moulton begins its influence. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, crushed in small lots, and fermented with select yeast strains. Barrel selection is tailored to each varietal. Long, slow aging (12 to 18 months in French or American oak barrels) and unfined, unfiltered wines are the key to our winemaking techniques.  Bottling follows, with an additional six to twelve months of aging before any wines are released for your enjoyment.

We invite you to visit us and taste as well as experience our rich heritage and award winning wines. The winery is open for your tasting pleasure on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The Tasting Room, located on the site of the original Teacher’s Carriage House, is an intimate area dedicated to showcasing our premium wines. The outside veranda overlooks the Estate vines with spectacular views of the canyons and ridges of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Cinnabar Winery

Cinnabar Winery is a family-owned winery that embraces winemaking as a blend of science and nature’s magic. Rooted in the Santa Cruz Mountains at our lively Saratoga and Gilroy Tasting Rooms, we partner with local growers to transform California’s finest grapes into distinct and approachable wines.

Our History

Established in 1983 by the late Tom Mudd, Cinnabar initially planted vineyards and built a majestic winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. After Tom’s passing, the estate changed hands in 2007, and Cinnabar found its new home in downtown Saratoga.

In 2019, Ron Mosley, the original vineyard manager, took ownership, completing a remarkable full-circle journey. Ron is dedicated to honoring Cinnabar’s legacy and leading the business toward an exciting future. Cinnabar’s philosophy remains rooted in having fun with serious wine.

The Magic

We revel in the variations of California’s diverse regions, from the Santa Cruz Mountains to Paso Robles, Santa Lucia Highlands, the Red Hills of Lake County, and Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley. Through longstanding partnerships with artisan growers, we cherish the land and climate variations that produce an array of fruit.

The Science

Under the guidance of Winemaker Alejandro Aldama, who has been with Cinnabar for over 30 years, every step of the winemaking process is carefully overseen. Meticulously selecting vineyards based on soil, climate, and viticultural practices, we cultivate grapevines that are hand-harvested in the morning cool and gently handled in nearby cellars. Fermented in small oak barrels or stainless steel tanks, our wines embody the essence of their respective regions. With mastery and patience, our cellar team ensures that each bottle of Cinnabar wine captivates with elegance and enchanting flavors.

Gali Vineyards

Gali Vineyards produces estate-grown, award-winning wine. Their vineyards are located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, just 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy tastings in their new Tasting Room located in Downtown Los Gatos. The tasting is inclusive of their famous Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, and Syrah. Gali Vineyards is family-owned and operated by Los Gatos residents, Janice and Joseph Gali. For more information visit their website galivineyards.com or their Instagram @galivineyards. Cheers!

Griffin Hill Vineyards

Welcome to Griffin Hill! We’re a very small winery and vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA.  Each year, we make about 300 cases of wine.  Our goal is to make wines that are interesting, food-friendly and inspiring.  This is accomplished by hand-tending the vines and a patient, low-tech winemaking style that allows the flavor of the exquisite fruit grown in these hills to shine through.  Our facility is located in one of the most famous, yet so small as to rarely get mentioned, wine-growing areas of the world.  The Santa Cruz Mountains rise up between Silicon Valley and the Pacific Ocean.  While we recognize that many (most?) of the hard-working people in Silicon Valley barely take note of these beautiful mountains, it’s now our mission to bring the exquisite taste of the wines which represent and capture the flavor of these mountains to the people of Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz.

Michael Franti says “every flower got a right to be bloomin’.”  We believe we can farm this land and still care for it.  We’ve learned that native plants and insects, when cared for, will naturally keep out insects that would harm our vines and they will outcompete invasive weed species.  We just don’t need widespread spraying of insecticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers.

In the photo, the new owners, Jeff and Claudia Griffin, back in April 2011, had just purchased our first vineyard. Our purchase grew out of Claudia’s non-stop interest in food-producing plants.  We began looking on the weekends for a small plot of land for a farm and orchard that would be our weekend getaway/project, but after some reflection, I told her that I wanted to try growing wine grapes.   Mostly a beer drinker, I had earlier “discovered” wine in an “aha” moment with a Duckhorn Merlot at a family dinner.   I know – Merlot, right?

Kirigin Cellars

Kirigin Cellars is one of California’s oldest wineries

Kirigin Cellars has been a part of California’s wine country since 1916. There are 33 acres of rolling vineyards, nine acres of luscious green grass, over1000 rose bushes, and 100 redwood sequoias all surrounded by hills and rangeland.

We invite you to visit Kirigin Cellars, the home of our famous coffee-and chocolate- infused Vino de Mocca, and a host other wonderful wines made from grapes grown on the property.  We offer you the opportunity to try handcrafted wines from 11 different wine grapes.

Kirigin Cellars is open daily 10am to 5pm.  We are kid and dog friendly.

Lion Ranch
Vineyards & winery

Hi folks– you want to know more about us? Here’s the whole story. But more importantly, thanks for your interest, and we can’t wait to meet you and share our wines with you.”

Cheers, Kim & Todd

While living in San Francisco, our first big adventure together, we decided we wanted to dive head first into the wine industry. Moving to San Martin in 2009 with this goal in mind, we found a property that could be our home as well as our vineyard. Land work began immediately, clearing, leveling, understanding water flow, controlling weeds. Purchasing a tractor really drove home the fact that we were out of the city and on to our next adventure. Kim switched careers and began working for a local tasting room, apprenticing in the vineyard and winery at every opportunity. While Kim gained the “hands on” experience from grapevines to sales, Todd began flooding his brain with grape growing and winemaking information, reading textbooks, articles, and blogs. Finding ourselves in a welcoming community of farmers and winemakers, we participated in study groups based on winemaking education courses. Hearing experiences from our local experts, we quickly learned much about the industry and process.

Traveling to France in 2009 and touring from the Cote d’ Azure to Provence to the Rhone to Lyon, we fell completely, head over heels, in love with the Viognier grape, visiting Condrieu and appreciating all that it could offer. For nearly two weeks we had a daily ‘happy hour,’ tasting some of the best Viognier in the world, complemented by fresh bread and french cheese. Coming back stateside we began the painstaking work of tasting every domestically-made Viognier and many other white Rhone varietals. An amazing dinner in the Mission district of San Francisco with friends included our first taste of single varietal Grenache Blanc–and again, love at first taste.

Our original estate vineyard was planted in 2011. We tended every single plant of our 5 acre property with our own hands, with occasional help from willing family and friends. All 4000+ plants were handled repeatedly as they were trained, pruned, trained, pruned, over and over. A true “labor of love,” raising grapes takes a lot of determination, commitment, patience, and backbreaking labor. Even in our glorious, Mediterranean climate, it was hot, dusty, dirty work…with beautiful, delicious rewards.

We acquired another property in 2013 allowing us the space to create the wines we have to share with you. Just one-third mile south of the original vineyard site, the growing conditions are prime, with the land having been fallow for a number of years. Preparations have already begun for planting another 4000+ vines of Rhone varietals; this time they’ll be red. Similar in soil and climate, the terroir at the new property is equally suitable for grapevines, as it, too, was once part of the large land tract previously known as Lion Ranch. We have been very diligent in creating an atmosphere in the vineyard which is sustainable for both our grapes and our family, including our dogs—we insist upon the highest quality grapes, but refuse to compromise by introducing harsh chemicals or pesticides.

Onsite tasting began in summer of 2015. Our newest vineyard of red Rhone varietals was planted in spring of 2016.

Little Uvas Vineyards

Welcome to Little Uvas Vineyards

Uvas is the Spanish word for grapes. Little Uvas is not the size of our grapes, but describes the size of the vineyard, the company, and the level of wine production.

Our vines include a unique block of Santa Clara Valley grown Sauvignon Blanc as well as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and a very special small grove of Barbera grapes.

In 2016, we planted 400 Cabernet, 400 Merlot, and 400 Sauvignon Blanc vines. In 2017, we addded 400 more Cabernet, 400 Syrah, and 200 Barbera vines. Our total productin is a “little” over 450 cases.

Silver Mountain
Vineyards

Silver Mountain is known for our organically-farmed Estate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs; its famous Bordeaux blend ‘Alloys’; and its Gold Medal-winning Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel from the Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Lucia Highlands. As well, Silver Mountain sells Pinot Noirs from Sonnet Wine Cellars, the label of our winemaker, Anthony Craig. Our premier wines are marked by their quality, rich flavors, and complexity.

Our wine has been handcrafted with gentle care, in accordance with Silver Mountain’s winemaking practice, which has always called for careful, gentle handling of the fruit, both in the vineyard and winery. The grapes are handpicked, not crushed but destemmed, and we start the winemaking process with whole berry fermentation. ‘Punch-downs’ are done using a unique air-induced process that is gentler on the fruit. Transferring the wine to and from the tanks and into bottles is all gravity fed. This is the process we started with 40 years ago and still continue to do today and for many years to come.

One of the largest solar arrays in the Santa Cruz Mountains is at Silver Mountain. Built in 2007, the multi-purpose ‘Triple Green Canopy’ reduces energy requirements, saves resources, collects rain water, makes Silver Mountain entirely energy self-sufficient, and generate extra energy to the power grid. Its construction is in keeping with the organic and sustainable philosophy that Jerold O’Brien has practiced with his vineyard and winery since the inception of Silver Mountain.

Moose Mountain
Vineyards

Moose Mountain Vineyards is named after an incredible rescue dog named Moose who taught me that a “being” can fill a void that is created by a loss of a love and allow incredible growth and excitement about life to be awakened again. Moose has adapted to the eastern foothills of tiny San Martin, and he roams the hills as if it were “Moose Mountain”Moose has invigorated a passion via protecting the vines from deer, rabbit and birds like no other vineyard watchman. His passion for protecting of the vines has allowed his owner/winemaker to explore the passions of creating unique French blended organic red wines that are deeply complex and loaded with healthy polyphenols that infuse the best of life into all.

“Vine to Wine in the Redwoods”

THE VINEYARD:

Wrights Station Vineyard sits at 1,800 feet along the summit of the Santa Cruz Mountains, above the fog, but still tightly connected to the maritime influences of the Pacific, just over 10 miles away.  The vineyard faces northeast, advantageous in avoiding most of the direct sunlight in the afternoon heat, and slopes fairly steeply down towards the genesis of the Los Gatos Creek below.  The soils are composed of a complex mix of sand, clay, and slate, undoubtedly influenced by the shifting earth caused by the San Andreas Fault, which is (almost literally) a stone’s throw away.

Originally planted in 1981, the vineyard’s Chardonnay is some of the oldest in the region.  Planted to AXR rootstock that has survived any threat of phylloxera, the Wente Clone 4 scions typically produce a beautiful crop of large clusters.  In its mountain climate, the fruit’s natural acidity is retained, and flavors of citrus, apple, and pear are the backbones, with hints of tropical fruits rounding out the experience. These vines are non-irrigated, intensifying the flavors of the berry.

Where once a horse jumping and riding arena stood—that doubled as a staging area for fire trucks during the Lexington Fire of 1985—Pinot Noir was planted in 2000 and 2001. Clones 667 and 777 predominate, with a selection of Pommard completing the roster.  New plantings are on 101-14 rootstock with the remainder being grafted onto aged Chardonnay rootstock.  Fruit flavors are typically bold—cherries and dark berries—and the subsequent wines produced rich and rewarding.

THE HISTORY:

Located at the top of Los Gatos Creek Canyon, the location that became Wrights Station gained prominence because of the sudden influx of railroad workers, mostly Chinese, who were housed at this now-remote place while boring the 1.2 mile Summit Tunnel through the mountains beginning in 1877.  The location was named after James Richards Wright, the owner of a large parcel of land adjacent to the construction site. Wright owned a fruit orchard and vineyard nearby and also owned the Arbor Villa, a stagecoach hotel near Summit. The town of Wrights can officially be dated to 1879 when the post office was established at the station house. The Summit Tunnel was completed the next year in 1880, placing the station as a vital link between the Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz. Wrights became an important freight station for farmers who wanted to quickly bring their goods to market.  Nearly 3,200 acres of fruit orchards and vineyards were under cultivation by the late 1800s.

Fortino Winery

The History of our founders and by extension our winery starts in Italy. Both of our founders, Ernest (Ernie) and Marie Fortino goes back to Italy where they were born. Marie emigrated from Sicily to the United States with her family at the age of eleven, while Ernie came to the United States at the age of 23 from Cosenza, in the region of Calabria.

Ernie met Marie in Santa Cruz, where their respective families were living. Ernie was immediately taken by Marie, and gave her a promise ring while she was still in school, thus ensuring that she would not date anyone other than him. They married in Santa Cruz in 1964 and started their lives together. Ernie and Marie had two children (Gino and Teri) when they found and purchased a very run down winery in Gilroy in 1970. As young newlyweds and immigrants, they had very modest means, however they were able to purchase the building and the land surrounding it, thus beginning their legacy in the Santa Clara Valley.

In the early years, everything that they earned went back into the vineyards, or the buildings. They lived in the front house for the first few years, doing repairs as they could to make it comfortable and family safe. Gino and Teri grew up in and around the vineyards, sometimes napping alongside their parents as they worked planting, maintaining and picking the fruit during the harvest.

Ernie and Marie tended the winery, selling bottles day and night as people stopped to purchase. Marie tells stories today of hearing a car coming into the winery and running out to take care of a customer looking to purchase a bottle or two.

They gradually built onto the original structure, and managed to grow, crush, ferment, age, bottle and label their wines right here at the winery. They welcomed all as family, and treated every customer as an extension of their own. It is this warmth and friendliness that our winery is still known for today. In 1995, Gino and Teri took over from their parents. Gino runs the winery day to day, while Teri maintains and interest and ownership. Gino’s and Teri’s children are now working towards taking over the winery from their parents, thus continuing the family story for a new generation.

Today, we still grow, crush, ferment, age, bottle and label our own wines just as Ernie and Marie did 50+ years ago.
